While Hi Roc Lanes may be changing its name and ownership, bowling is here to stay.
Two years ago, Karl Wolf sold the 40-lane bowling alley located at 32 Ballston Ave. to local developer Frank Parillo and Rich Sheldon, causing alarm to local bowlers that the only bowling alley might not survive in a city where million dollar condominiums seem to be popping up on every corner. “We are the only (bowling alley) here, and we are a part of the community,” Sheldon said. “We will maintain a bowling facility as long as we have leagues and community members supporting us.” The bowling alley’s name has been changed to Saratoga Strike Zone. The property was sold to Sheldon and Parillo on June 5, 2006 for $3.19 million, and was the center of a developing dispute when a Clifton Park developing company hoped to build 150 condos on the site worth $100 million. Wolf’s lease ended Wednesday and reins were handed over to Sheldon and Parillo to take over. Sheldon said renovation work will begin immediately to remodel the facility. Howard Ellman of Dynamic Design, a bowling industry architecture firm, was hired to plan the renovations. While designs are not finalized yet, Sheldon said the interior will be refurbished and an arcade will be added. Food and beverage areas will also be expanded. “I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming projects,” said Sheldon who has been a part of the bowling industry for 20 years. Saratoga Strike Zone is the home of more than 30 leagues that incorporate all ages and levels of experience. “Bowling is a past time and a staple in the community,” Sheldon said. “People of all ages from kids using bumpers to professionals will continue to enjoy the facility.” |
