Third generation racer Ronnie Johnson took the Checkered Flag in last Friday night’s 35-Lap Modified feature at the Albany Saratoga Speedway.

Johnson of Duanesburg was rebounding from a disappointing opening night that saw him explode an engine only four laps into the race. This week Johnson started 7th and was up to second place by the halfway point, but would need the help of a Lap 27 Caution Flag as Mike Perrotte had taken the lead from Tony Kawalchuk on Lap 17 and had opened up a huge lead. With

Johnson now on Perrotte’s rear bumper for the restart, Perrotte stuck to the low groove he had been running, while Johnson would swing his car to the outside in each corner. Every time Johnson pulled ahead in the turns, Perrotte would regain the lead down the straight-away. On Lap 32, Johnson got around Perrotte in Turn 4 and took his groove away making Perrotte brake just long enough for Johnson to pull away and capture his first win of 2008 and his 13th career win at the Malta oval. Todd Stone finished third ahead of Kawalchuk and Dave Camara.

Josh Hohenforst closed the deal in this week’s 25-Lap Sportsman feature. Hohenforst led most of last week’s race only to fade in the late going. This week Hohenforst started 5th and needed only four laps to get by early leader Dave DePaulo. With the race being slowed only one time by a Lap 12 caution, the Gloversville youngster pulled away to record his second career win at the track. Matt Depew, a few seconds behind, came across the line second with Chris Busta taking third for the second week in a row. Rob Langevin and Ken Anatriello rounded out the Top Five.

Frank Hoard, III took his second consecutive Budget Sportsman feature in their caution plagued 25-lap race. Hoard started 6th and passed rookie Seth Howe for the lead on a Lap 6 restart.

Ricky Quick, making his first appearance of the year, pressured Hoard in the late stages of the race but would have to settle for a second place finish. Howe hung on to finish third ahead of Bryan Davis and Jim Nagle. With Race Director Bruce Richards keeping a close eye on the Budget Sportsman Division, should Hoard win again next week, he will most likely have restrictions put on his #13.

The Pro-Stock feature saw a first time winner as Ballston Spa’s Walt Brownell, Jr. beat last week’s winner Jeff Washburn to the Finish Line. Brownell started fourth and patiently worked the inside groove to finally overtake race-long leader Cale Kneer on Lap 20. Brownell then fended off Vinny Santoro who repeatedly pulled along side for the lead. Brownell’s final challenge came in post-race tech. After a thorough check of his carburetor, however, Brownell was awarded the victory. Washburn passed Santoro on the final corner for second and Kneer finished fourth. Bob Schmidt completed the Top Five.

The action packed Limited feature had last week’s top two finishers battling for the win again.

Dan Older of Ballston Spa beat Dan Petronis by 0.429 seconds at the line for his fist win of the year. Older started 8th and passed fellow Ballstonian Mike Ostrander for the lead on Lap 13.

Older then had to hold off Jim Monroe and finally Petronis for the hard fought victory. Following the two Dans were John Filarecki, Rick Howe and Mike Pfau.

Mike Cranston of Maltaville won the 4 and 6 cylinder Mini-Stock feature.

Racing continues this Friday, May 2, with all classes competing and the first qualifying race hitting the track at 6:45 p.m.
