The Skidmore College Department of Theatre will present its spring performance of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas starting April 11.

The play takes place at The Mainstage of the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theatre at Skidmore College and is directed by Carolyn Anderson. The show will run over the course of the next two weekends with dates on April 11 through 13 and April 17 through 19. All performances will take place at 8 p.m. except Sunday, April 13 and Saturday, April 19 which will feature matinee performances starting at 2 p.m.

The lead rolls will be performed by Chris Jacobson, who plays the first voice narrator and Rev. Eli Jenkins and Cara Brody, who will perform the second voice narrator and the role of multiple characters.

According to the play’s director, Carolyn Anderson, Under Milk Wood was written as a response to the terrible results of WWII. The play is hailed by many as Thomas’ masterpiece. It was originally a radio play and later a stage play and film by Thomas.

The play itself is a humorous lyrical account of one spring day in a small, Welsh seacoast town.

As the people of the town sleep, we enter their dreams and experience their fantasies and nightmares. Dawn approaches and we watch as they engage the noisy day and then fade into the darkness of night. Under Milk Wood consists of over 60 colorful characters who are there to remind us of what it means to be alive.

“It’s something for the whole family,” Anderson said.

Dylan Marlais Thomas is widely regarded as one of the Twentieth Century’s most influential lyrical poets. Although Thomas was primarily a poet, he also published short stories, film scripts, publicly performed his works and conducted radio broadcasts. Under Milk Wood is the only play Thomas wrote before his death in 1959.

Following the show's performance on Sunday, April 13, the Skidmore theatre department in conjunction with the school’s English department will hold a discussion period to talk about Thomas’ poetry. The discussion will coincide with April being National Poetry Month.

Tickets can be purchased at the Skidmore College Theatre box office.
