Saratoga Central Catholic lost its first game of the season on Wednesday against Fort Plain, 2-1. freshman Billy McDonough was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored for the Saints (1-1). On Monday, the Saints kicked off the season with a 5-3 league victory over Duanesburg on the road. In that contest, McDonough made the most of his first varsity start as he struck out four batters in 4 2/3 innings to get the win. Dennis Tario didn’t give up any hits in relief and got the key hit at the plate with a game-winning RBI double in the fifth inning. Cannan Tyner had two singles, an RBI and two stolen bases for the Saints, who open up their home season today (April 11) against Mayfield. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. Saratoga Springs dropped its season-opener, 2-1, on the road at Mohonasen in a nine-inning contest. Scott Hladik had a double for the Blue Streaks, who return to action at CBA today (April 11). First pitch is 4:30 p.m. Schuylerville got the best of Hoosic Valley on Monday in an 18-12 slugfest. Levi Washburn led the Black Horses (1-1) with three doubles and teammate Eric Schwalbach added a home run in a 14-hit barrage. Next up for Schuylerville is the Gloversville Tournament on Saturday. First pitch is 9:30 a.m. Softball It was an up and down week for Saratoga Central Catholic. On Wednesday, the Saints came up short against Fort Plain, 2-1. In that contest, Jenna Carson had a double, a triple and a run scored. Teammate Betsey Towne added a triple, single and RBI. On Tuesday, Spa Catholic easily defeated St. Johnsville, 15-0. Towne and Jen Diggins combined for a no-hitter in the four-inning contest. Towne struck out nine batters. Diggins had a single, two RBI and scored three runs. On Monday, the Saints lost a 2-1 nail biter at Duanesburg. Pitcher Katie Jasper struck out 11 batters in a losing cause for Spa Catholic. Carson had a double and the lone RBI for the Saints. Spa Catholic returns to action next week with a road trip to Myrtle Beach. Schuylerville improved to 2-2 on the season with a 7-0 victory over Corinth on Tuesday. Tiffany McCall went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Boys lacrosse Ballston Spa had a 9-8 lead after three periods against Niskayuna on Tuesday, but the Scotties were beat in the end, 11-9. Ballston Spa got three goals from Mike Boisvert in the loss. Adam Janis added a goal and an assist. The Scotties host LaSalle on Saturday (April 12) at 4 p.m. Girls Lacrosse Saratoga Springs suffered its first Suburban Council loss of the spring on Wednesday in a 7-3 defeat to Niskayuna. Rachelle Burke, Morgan Powell and Kat Sutton scored the lone Saratoga goals. On Monday, the Blue Streaks were much the best in a 16-3 win over Colonie. Sutton led the cause with four goals and Maggie Deloria added three. Saratoga travels to Guilderland today (April 11) for a 4:45 p.m. contest. Ballston Spa notched its first win of the season on Wednesday in a 10-8 victory over Johnstown. The Scotties (1-1) got four goals and two assists from Colleen Sweeney and Kayla Lawrence had five goals for the winners. Ballston Spa hosts Colonie today at 4 p.m. Boys Tennis Schuylerville was much the best in a 7-0 win over Argyle. The Black Horses were led by No. 1 player Evan Fort. John Martin and Tori Rotchford were big winners at No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively. Saratoga Springs had a mixed week on the courts with a win an 8-1 win over Shaker on Tuesday and an 8-1 loss to Guilderland on Monday. In the win, the Blue Streaks were led by No. 1 singles player Zach Arpey, and Bob Brown and Drew Kesner in doubles. Track and field The Saratoga Springs girls’ track and field team is off to a perfect 4-0 start with the latest win coming on Thursday against Bethlehem and Shaker at home. Led by senior and Providence University-bound Hannah Davidson, the Blue Streaks defeated Bethlehem, 109-68, and Shaker, 102-76. Davidson was first in the 800-meter with a time of 2 minutes, 19.8 seconds and second in the 1,500-meter in 5:01. Teammate Maddie Smith was the best in the 100-meter hurdles (13.9 seconds), the 200-meter (25.2), the long jump (17’4”) and the triple jump (34’5”). |
