Week three went very well for the competitors in the Global Fitness “Biggest Loser” weight-loss challenge.

Global Fitness, located at 165 High Rock in Saratoga Springs, is holding an eight-week contest that features 33 members. The members are broken up into three teams trained by Jeremy Engel, Vicki Cordi and Jake Yellen.

Each Thursday, all three teams meet at the gym and are weighed-in. For the week of April 3, the top loser was Ruth Ventela, of Gansevoort, who lost six pounds.

“This is a nice program. My team is very motivated,” Dana Medina, who is trained by Engel, said. “It’s a great way to meet people. I needed more of a push and this has done it for me.”

For the first week, the Blue Team (Jake Yellen) lost 69 pounds for  2.84 percent Team Weight Loss. The White team (Vicki Cordi) lost 55 pounds for 2.46 percent Team Weight Loss. The Red Team (Jeremy Engel) lost 38.5 pounds for 1.67 percent Team Weight Loss.

There was a three-way tie for individuals between Sean Lynch (BLUE), Stephen Lovejoy (RED), and Michael Crimmins (WHITE) who all lost 11pounds.

Nutritional Tip No. 3

The sugar you eat is sucrose, a disaccharide. The sugar in your blood is a monosaccharide.

Sorry to get so technical, but I hope in seeing the two types you will recognize that a difference exists.

At any one time the glucose level in your blood stream should be 90 mg. per 100 ml. This means the total amount in your blood is about 5 grams or about 1 to 3 teaspoonfuls.

Now, when you eat a candy bar containing 8 teaspoonfuls of sugar, or pie at 10, or ice cream at 8, you send in a high charge of 8 to 20 spoons of sugar into a system that is geared to maintain itself with only 1 to 3 teaspoonfuls, a chaotic problem is encountered. This overload must be dealt with first by your pancreas and its hormone insulin. Then, when the insulin gets too high, the adrenal gland must manufacture and distribute into the bloodstream its insulin governing hormones. Norma, natural food is not so highly concentrated and more importantly contains essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes which help the stomach to utilize what you have eaten.

This in turn helps each cell to obtain its proper nutrients.

The continual overcharging of one’s glands with sugar has a depressing influence on your metabolism. That is, instead of speeding it up, it actually slows it down, resulting among other things, in a lower than normal blood sugar.
