When Acousticade producer Steve Williams first visited the Adirondack region he had a vision to hold a concert that would not only promote music in a great destination area, but also help give back to the natural beauty of the region’s wildlife.

His choice to host Acousticade was the small city of Glens Falls, nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks.

“In searching I found this region that is going through a rebirth,” Williams said. “I saw it for what it was going to be and jumped on it.”

To Williams, the Adirondack Park is a place where people love to visit. He wanted the concert to take place in an area of the North Country where people would want to take a road trip to.

In the past three years, Glens Falls has started to go through a rebirth. The Civic Center has been instrumental in the city’s resurgence and many national music acts that have been drawn to the venue have been instrumental in bringing money to local businesses.

“I would like to see it bring some recognition and commerce to the city, including some additional cultural aspects to the area,” Williams said.

Williams has also been interested in getting people from the area involved in the event. He has done all of his business, from graphic design to marketing, with local businesses and has only gone outside of the area when he absolutely had to.

“I want to preserve what is here and keep it as a thriving natural community,” Williams said.

Aside from bringing music to the area, Williams also found that he wanted to help give back to the beauty of the Adirondack Park. He teamed up with an organization called the Adirondack Council. The group is a not-for-profit organization aimed at ensuring the wild character and ecological integrity of the Adirondack Park. The organization does not accept government funding, but rather relies on memberships, private donations and events to fund its preservation efforts.

John Sheehan, Communications Director for the Adirondack Council, said his organization has been involved with such groups as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York City Ballet, but they usually just tell him about the event and then send a check. This is the first chance for the organization to be involved with the promotion and the event, allowing them to promote their organization and its efforts.

Ten percent of the profits generated from the show will be donated to the Adirondack Council.

The organization has also gotten $10 thousand in free marketing due in part to Williams adding their name and logo to all Acousticade advertisements.

Sheehan also recognized that his organization tends to be at two ends of the spectrum with older people and college students making up a majority of their membership base. He hopes this will help to fill the gap and bring in a more diverse age range.

Williams’ vision of bringing music to a small Upstate community will come true when he hosts the first Acousticade at the Glens Falls Civic Center April 4-5.

The weekend will feature an assortment of national artists that will include performances by Odetta, Lori McKenna, Dan Layus and Duncan Sheik. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are priced at 29.95 per day and $59.90 for both nights.

Aside from attempting to bring commerce to Glens Falls businesses and support to the Adirondack Council, his goal is to also bridge the gap between the off season at SPAC and the area’s summer tourism by offering a music event that would encourage people to come visit during the area’s down time.

“People in the area at this time of year have cabin fever and are dying to get out,” Williams said.

Tickets are available now at Ticketmaster.com or Glens Falls Civic Center located at 1 Civic Center Plaza, Glens Falls, NY. You can also contact the Box Office at (518) 798-0202.
