New book will help you "Retire in a Weekend" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Ryan

Much of the success or failure a book experiences can be attributed to its title.

The name immediately gives off an impression, which can either entice or repel a potential reader.

As far as titles go, “Retire in a Weekend!” gets the job done. Author and Certified Financial Planner Bill Losey’s target audience is largely folks between the ages of 55 and 65, and how many baby boomer’s wouldn’t like a guide to making work optional?

Published by Love Your Life Publishing and released back in January 2008, “Retire in a Weekend!” was designed on honest feedback from pre-retirees. Losey surveyed his clients, people at his retirement and investment workshops and subscribers to his weekly newsletter, “Retirement Intelligence,” and received more than 12,000 responses full of people’s biggest retirement concerns and questions.

“It doesn’t matter who I am speaking to: male, female; high or low net worth; married or single; widowed or divorced,” he said. “All of their concerns and questions are almost exactly the same.

My book answers the vast majority of questions you have and provides sound advice and real world solutions to retirement.”

Losey, a lifelong New Yorker, was born in Yonkers and grew up in Westchester County. He relocated to Saratoga County for a job in 1999, and has resided in Wilton with his wife and three sons since 2001.

A graduate of Marist College, Losey earned his undergraduate degree in Communications with a specialization in Broadcasting. After college, he worked at a radio station for a few years.

Although he loved the job, Losey said he didn’t love the pay.

Losey went on to obtain certification in financial planning from the College for Financial Planning in Denver. In addition to being a CFP, he’s also a Certified Senior Advisor and a Certified RSP-Trained Retirement Coach.

With 15 years of experience under his belt, Losey decided to strike out on his own three years ago. Bill Losey Retirement Solutions, LLC, an independent registered investment advisory firm he owns and operates, has grown significantly in its short existence and allows him to work out of his home.

“It was by far the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most beneficial,” Losey said. “I love working for myself. You get to make all the decisions, and you’re fully accountable for your own success.”

Losey penned “Retire in a Weekend!” over the course of seven weeks last summer. Although the 43-year-old had wanted to write a book for more than a decade, the 176-page paperback proved to be more of a challenge than he’d anticipated.

“It was a difficult process. I’m naturally more of a speaker than a writer,” Losey said.

The local CFP conducts roughly 20 seminars a year. He also writes a weekly column for a local newspaper and a monthly one for an area magazine.

Based on the feedback he received, Losey found that most people shy away from finance books because they’re too technical, too confusing and too boring. He said his book is the exact opposite.

“This is short, simple and laced with humor. It’s easy to navigate and packaged in a way that somebody could read it in a couple of hours,” Losey said.

Since the book’s release, Losey has appeared on numerous radio and television shows in the United States and Canada, and has been featured in several newspaper articles. He said he has his fingers crossed about an appearance on “Good Morning America.”

“The book has raised me up, and given me more of a national profile,” Losey said. “It’s opened up a lot of doors that used to be closed.”

“Retire in a Weekend!” is available at Border’s in Saratoga Springs, Amazon.com and www.retireinaweekend.com for $29.95. The book comes with a bonus DVD that tackles the 10 biggest mistakes people make when retiring and how to avoid them.
