The Downtown Business Association will soon be heading in new directions as five new board members were elected during Wednesday evening’s meeting.

Those elected for the two-year term are: Scott Beale of Grey Gelding Bistro, John DeMarco of Lyrical Ballad Bookstore, Leigh Ollman of the Arts Council and Beekman Street Association, Michael Sposili of Skidmore College and Laura Thompson of Eddie Bauer.

“As a new business owner, I’m very excited about coming on board.  I really want to participate on what is going on downtown and there are so many pros and cons to being a part of it all,” Beale said.

Ollman joined the association in hopes to bridge the gap between Broadway and the arts district on Beekman Street.

“I’m so excited to be elected to the board of directors for a lot of reasons.  In relation to my membership in the Arts Council and Beekman Street Association, I’m interested in seeing how I can be a link.  It’s unbelievable how many people have never been to Beekman Street,” she said.

Other members of the DBA were able to voice their concerns for downtown to guest speaker Anthony “Skip” Scirocco, Commissioner of Public Works.

“We are in a transition between Commissioner McTygue and myself and every day is a new experience and a challenge.  I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts,” he said.  “I’m honored to be here to get input.  It’s all a part of my job.”

A main issue for the DBA is setting up signs on the west side of Broadway to direct shoppers to stores off of the main drag and parking. The idea of cigarette receptacles along Broadway was also brought to the table.

“It’s great to see people have concerns,” said Treasurer Mike Warfield.  “The city is in transition and it’s important for people to know that their voice means something and to get involved with what is going on.”
