Pulse - Celebrating Arts on the Edge PDF Print E-mail

Between the musical programming of its ArtSounds series and the visual arts presented in its gallery exhibitions, The Saratoga County Arts Council has really focused on making “edgy” art forms accessible to the entire Saratoga community over the past year.

In doing so, SCAC Executive Director Joel Reed said the organization has been supporting new and experimental artists while still remaining true to its overall mission.

The Council will celebrate this new direction this weekend with a new event called Arts on the Edge. The benefit, which will run from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, will take place at The Arts Center located at 320 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, and feature a light supper, valet parking and complimentary champagne, wine and beer.

Tickets are $75 or $35 for those 35 and under. All proceeds of the event will benefit SCAC’s public arts and education programs.

“We always do a spring event, but we’re really doing something new this year,” Reed said. “It’s a departure. It’s really exciting. I think people looking for something a little different will really enjoy this.”

A live auction begins at 8 p.m., and will include two special arts/travel packages. One is a trip for two to MASS MoCA in North Adams that includes museum admission, lunch at Café Latino in the MASS MoCA compound and an overnight stay at The Porches, which Condé Nast Traveler has called “one of the coolest new hotels in the world.” The other trip is an arts weekend in New York with tickets to museums, performances at Lincoln Center and a personal tour of contemporary art exhibitions in the Chelsea gallery district.

In addition, Reed said people will have an opportunity to check out live music by some of the region’s most exciting composers, and an exhibition of work by the internationally renowned artists collective T.O.D.T.

Actively exhibiting since the late 1970s, the artists in T.O.D.T. have shown their work in venues such as the Whitney Museum and PS 1 in New York, the Venice Bienalle, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and other museums and galleries across the United States and Europe. The group’s creations have been said to always surprise and at times shock their viewers for the ways they meld everyday objects into artwork that raises serious questions about social and ethical issues, yet manages to be darkly humorous at the same time.

In the Dee Sarno Theater, musicians Andre O’Neil, Sara Ayers, and Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius will perform. Each has a uniquely different vision to share with open-minded audiences.

O’Neil is a cellist who comfortably straddles two worlds. He regularly performs with baroque chamber ensembles up and down the East Coast and in Europe, but also pushes the boundaries of his instrument as a composer and performer adept in extended performing techniques.

By sampling, layering, looping and pitch-shifting her voice and combining it with occasional guitar washes as well as other noises, Ayers creates richly textured sonic atmospheres. The critically acclaimed vocalist/composer has established herself as one of the most sought-after sonic explorers, and found her music utilized in the most unusual and unexpected ways all over the globe.

Ayers will be accompanied by Twisted Pair, who have earned notoriety in the region for their live video sampling and audioreactive imagery. She said she is looking forward to performing at the benefit.

“This is for a good cause,” Ayers said. “If you’re an artist, you need to support the arts.”

Woodbury Kasius’s piano playing, which incorporates jazz, classical and world music, will close out the musical program. Drawing inspiration from nature as well as her own diverse interests and experiences, she has been described as “a resourceful composer of eclectic tastes and graceful eloquence.”

On top of everything that’s going on at Arts on the Edge, Reed will also make a special announcement about the Horses, Saratoga Style project. He hinted that some of the horses are scheduled for an exhibition this summer that “will make all of Saratoga proud.”

“To me, this sounds like a great event. It’s a chance to go out and enjoy new experiences and hear new music,” Ayers said. “I think it’s going to be a really fun evening.”

Reservations are required for Arts on the Edge. To get on the list, call The Arts Council at 584-4132 before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 14.
