Before any of the chip fab plants for Advanced Micro Devices can be built, representatives from the company have asked the Malta Town Board to change parts of the Planned Development District for the Luther Forest Technology Campus.

The tech campus is located in the towns of Malta and Stillwater.

The Town Board and Planning Board have a binder to review of AMD’s plans before the Monday, March 3 Planning Board meeting.

Malta Town Supervisor Paul Sausville said while AMD couldn’t give 100 percent commitment to Malta and the tech park, he said this is more than a casual goal or vision.

“It’s becoming a reality one step at a time,” Sausville said. “AMD has reassured me that the next fab they build will be in Malta.”

He said the town, county, state legislature and AMD all have a huge commitment in the Luther Forest Technology Campus. The sewer infrastructure is being upgraded, 5 1/2 miles of road will be up for bidding soon and Sausville said the Round Lake bypass is being constructed now.

At a workshop at the Town Hall on Monday, Feb. 25, more than 50 citizens and public officials attended.

Sausville said there are two important decisions for the town to make: having AMD apply for some modifications to the PDD and the question of more environmental scoping.

He said the planners, attorneys and engineers will all take a look at the plans AMD presented and take the proper course of action.

One of the changes would be AMD building three plants instead of four, each being about 980,000 square-feet. The number of employees is also expected to increase to more than 1,400.

“I was surprised to hear that,” Sausville said of the number of jobs. “It’s good news.”

With more potential jobs, he said that means the town will be able to retain jobs to this area and keep local people here.

Sausville said land will be cleared this summer for the project and will be shovel ready by this time next year.

“This project is going to happen,” he said.

Joseph Dalton, president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, said the efforts on the development of Luther Forest dates back to the early 1980s. Dalton credits former president and vice president of Saratoga Economic Development Corporation Ken Green and Jack Kelley for getting the project to this point.

“They took it through the whole approval process, went through thousands of pages of paper work and dozens of meetings,” Dalton said.

He said it will be a boom to the Ballston Spa School District and will be a major tax payer in the community from day one.

He said AMD has indicated they are pleased with the school system in the area and representatives from the school district have taken trips to Oregon where chip plants are currently.

Dalton said the chamber is looking for feedback from hi-tech companies in regards to what courses they would incorporate into colleges. He said with the talent here, the majority of the jobs for the tech campus can come from Saratoga County.
