Fire rips through village
A fire devastated downtown Corinth last week, leaving some homeless and many business wondering what to do next. A furnace was the likely cause of the fire that started late Monday, Feb. 11 into Tuesday morning. The fire spread through the downtown and knocked out power to residents. Several roads were closed due to the fire and cold weather played a role in extinguishing the blaze. The Corinth Community Churches have established an account at TD Banknorth for the fire victims. UAlbany student in coma A Saratoga Springs High School graduate and current student at the University at Albany was assaulted on his way home from a bar last weekend. Daniel McKenna, 20, was in a coma following an altercation with an unknown man. It was reported that McKenna got in an argument with another man outside Cagney’s bar on Central Avenue earlier in the night. It was also reported that his friends found him the next day bleeding from his mouth and nose, and took him to the hospital. Bus driver charged Douglas G. Conrad, 35, of 151 Jefferson St., Saratoga Springs, was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 13, and charged with four misdemeanor counts of forcible touching. Police allege Conrad, who had served as a bus driver for the Saratoga Springs City School District, forcibly touched two 14-year-old boys over an eight-month period in 2007. According to court documents, the incidents occurred in February, April and September, and included unwanted attempted contact with the boys’ buttocks and genitals. Conrad, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was arrested at his home on a warrant Wednesday night. In addition to the misdemeanor counts, an order of protection was issued ordering him to stay away from the two alleged victims. Conrad was remanded to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash or $5,000 bail bond. Malta home destroyed A fire on Tuesday, Feb. 12, destroyed a home located near the intersection of East Line and Round Lake roads in Malta. Neighbors reported the blaze at 2:22 p.m. No one was inside the residence at 177 East Line Road at the time of the fire. Round Lake Fire Department spokesman Joseph Plewinski said that by the time firefighters got to the site, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Saratoga County fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. |
