Laughter can be the best medicine. If you ask Dr. Joel Goodman of The Humor Project, it is the best medicine.

For 31 years, Goodman and The Humor Project have been bringing smiles to millions of people’s faces.

“A smile is the shortest distance between two people,” Goodman said, quoting. “Humor is a great gift we can give each other.”

This year’s HUMORetreat is set for June 20 to 22 at Silver Bay on Lake George. Goodman said the early registration discounts for the conference are available until March 1, but people can sign up right up to two weeks prior to the event.

“People come from around the world for this event,” Goodman said.

Goodman said the idea for the Humor Project grew out of a non-funny matter. He said his father was diagnosed with an aneurism and it was a life or death situation for him. Goodman traveled to Houston and on his way to the hospital with his mom, the gentleman driving them named Alvin made them chuckle.

“In four minutes, he melted our tension and terror,” Goodman said.

He said his dad made it through his surgery and humor helped his family through the process.

The retreat this year will be three days and feature a special “Legacy of Laughter” presentation by Lucie Arnaz, who will accept the Laughtime Achievement Award on behalf of her parents,

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

“We are excited about having her attend,” Goodman said of Lucie Arnaz.

Goodman said there are a variety of sessions and something for everybody. About 50 percent of attendees are in the healthcare profession, 25 percent in education and 25 percent miscellaneous.

“It is a fascinating mix of people,” Goodman said. “People use it personally or on the job use.”

He said one misconception of The Humor Project is that it’s for comedians. While some are comedians, Goodman said attendees come from all walks of life.

“The purpose is to add more humor to peoples lives,” he said.
