As of 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2008, new Commissioner of Public Works, Skip Scirocco, was officially on the job, but not yet sworn in.
“I’m excited to get to work and make things happen,” Scirocco said Wednesday afternoon. Scirocco was sworn in with other City Council members on Tuesday. He takes over from Thomas McTygue, who ran the department for more than 30 years. Scirocco defeated McTygue in the November 2007 election. As soon as he took over Scirocco had to deal with snow removal from another winter storm and dealing with snow that fell from previous storms. He said the crews handled the initial snowfall and were working on sidewalk and fire hydrant clean up. “The guys have done a fantastic job,” Scirocco said. “It’s a real tough job.” DPW workers are on a call list for snow removal and cleanup, and Scirocco said many go to sleep when it’s light out. “I owe it to them and the people of the city owe it to them,” he said. “I have good people behind me.” One of the main people behind him is his deputy. “Pat (Design) was the best guy for the job,” Scirocco said of his deputy. “He has everything under control.” Design was deputy under McTygue before resigning from his post in 2007. Scirocco said the main priority during and after a snow storm are the main roads. The city is broken into 20 districts for plowing and removal, with crews scheduled to certain areas. Scirocco said they adjust the work force as needed during the winter months, dealing with snow. He said he won’t have a full crew in for a few inches of snow. He said when a snow emergency is issued for residents to move their cars off the road if possible. “It can get tough,” he said of plowing the streets. “It is important for residents to cooperate.” Scirocco said if cars aren’t removed or moved to alternate side parking, they can be towed and fined. The new City Council had an orientation on Wednesday regarding the aspects of city government. “It’s an exciting time,” Scirocco said. “I think I’ll make a difference.” |
