Ballston Spa’s Victorian Holiday Weekend has been showing off what the “Village of Friends” has to offer for more than a decade.
The yearly celebration, which is sponsored by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association returns to town this weekend from Dec. 7-9. Ellen Mottola, executive administrative assistant for the BSBPA, anticipates there will be at least a couple thousand people in attendance this weekend. Unlike many other years, this year’s VHW won’t have to compete with larger events in Saratoga Springs or Troy. “This weekend is all about enjoying time with friends and family,” Mottola said. “Ballston Spa is a great community, and this is a great way to get in the holiday spirit.” Folks can expect holiday floats, musicians, animals, carolers, fire trucks and more at the annual Santa Parade, which more than 30 groups will be marching in. The community event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 7, with the parade reaching the village at 7 p.m. At approximately 8:15 p.m., Santa will officially light the village Christmas tree at Wiswall Park. Shops and restaurants will be open throughout the evening with music, refreshments, demonstrations and displays, as part of the special holiday-themed version of First Friday. Businesses, residents, and organizations in the community will be donating decorated tabletop trees, garlands, wreaths, candles, and holiday items to exhibit and sell at the Festival of Trees from Friday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 9 in the school gymnasium. The event, which is hosted by St. Mary’s Church and sponsored in part by the Ballston Spa House and Garden Club, will run from 12 - 9 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds from the sale of the items will go to support community events and village beautification. Admission into the festival will be $2 per person, with the proceeds from admittance going to St. Mary’s youth group. People can visit eight beautifully decorated homes in the historic village of Ballston Spa from 12 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and then head over to a dessert reception from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Festival of Trees. The reception includes a performance by a capella singing group Drastic Measures from Skidmore College. Tickets are $15, and that includes admission to the Festival of Trees.
