A journey for two friends has led them to “All the Right Angles” for their first shows in the area.

Jon Katz, a national bestselling author and photographer, and Anthony Armstrong, a concrete artisan, will showcase their work, “All the Right Angles”, at the fine custom framing and gifts shop at 526 Maple Ave., (Route 9) on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The show and book signing is also a fundraiser for two beneficiaries – hospice and a trust fund for Karlie Armstrong-Gates. She is a 5-year-old whose mom was recently murdered and is Armstrong’s niece.

Part of the proceeds from the book sale and any photos or sculptures will be split between the two causes.

Katz said he started taking photographs of things he used to put in words. After taking photos of Armstrong’s journey, the two men became friends and are working on a picture book called Paying Attention.

Armstrong was diagnosed with ADD earlier this year. Katz said when Armstrong suffers, so does he. The book will go along with the experiences of Armstrong and  Katz.

“It’s a story of our friendship,” Katz said. “I was capturing what he was going through.”

Katz said five years ago Armstrong was a handyman on his farm and helped him get through his first winter. Now, Armstrong has his own business.

He is looking forward to doing a show with Armstrong. At 2 p.m. Katz will give a talk about the evolution of his photographs and Armstrong will discuss his concrete sculpting.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote once that friendship is the one true miracle of nature, and I believe it, Katz said. He dedicated his first Bedlam Farm book, “The Dogs of Bedlam Farm,” to Armstrong.

Katz said owner of All the Right Angles, Stephanie Arpey, is his exclusive framer and is excited his first photography show is there.

“This is a great opportunity for me and it’s great to have support,” he said.

Katz said it is very different taking photos than writing books. He’s taken more than 5,000 photos since June 2007, when he first started photography. Now, he takes his camera everywhere.

“It’s quite a different experience for me,” he said.

He said it is easy to take a lot of photos in the digital age, but not all of them are good.

Living on his Bedlam Farm in Washington County, he takes his dogs for a walk each morning and gets the opportunity to take shots of the sun rising over the mountains and shots some people never have the chance to see.
