The City Council will most likely have three new faces when they hold meetings in 2008, but two will remain the same.

The Democrats sole contested winner on the City Council was Commissioner of Public Safety Ron Kim who defeated challenger Richard Wirth by more than 1,000 votes.

Mayor Valerie Keehn told supporters at the Inn at Saratoga to celebrate because there were two big winners on Election Night - Kim and City Supervisor Joanne Yepsen.

Commissioner Kim thanked all of his supporters before speaking of Keehn’s courage, honesty and love for the citizens of Saratoga Springs.

“In two years, she’s done far more for the city than any mayor in the past,” Kim said. “Tonight this victory for me is bittersweet.”

Kim said everything he is able to do in the next two years for the citizens of Saratoga Springs will be 90 percent because Keehn and things she did in this city.

The Commissioner of Finance race saw two new faces vying for the position and to give their respective party an advantage on the council. Current Commissioner Matt McCabe decided not to run for re-election, but had endorsed Democrat Jane Weihe just before Election Day.

Republican Kenneth Ivins received 3,924 to Weihe’s 3,770. The absentee ballots still need to be counted, but Ivins does have the advantage.

Before the results all came in, Ivins said he felt really good about his chances with no incumbent in the position. He thought both candidates had a 50/50 shot.

About halfway through the 25 voting districts coming in, Ivins was down by about two dozen votes, and at one point just four votes separated them.

“I didn’t win this. We won this,” Ivins said. “It was a team effort and the team won.”

He said his biggest obstacle was how well known his opponent was. He said he thought he did a really great job getting his name out, personally knocking on 5,000 doors.

“I’m ecstatic,” Ivins said shortly after the results were in. “It was practically a clear sweep.”

Commissioner of Accounts John Franck ran unopposed and will be on the council for a second term.
