The two other contested races in the city are for the Commissioner of Public Safety and the Commissioner of Finance.
Incumbent Democrat Ron Kim is vying for his second term as public safety commissioner. Republican Richard Wirth challenges Kim to be the head of the police and fire departments. Kim is also on the Independence and Working Families party lines, while Wirth is also slated on the Conservative line. Wirth named Michael W. O’Brien as his deputy if he is elected earlier in the week. With Matt McCabe not running for re-election there will definitely be a new finance commissioner after the Nov. 6 elections. Democrat Jane Weihe and Republican Kenneth Ivins are facing off for the vacant spot. Weihe is also on the Independence and Working Families party lines, while Ivins is on the Conservative line too. Weihe taught history and government courses at Burnt Hill-Ballston Lake High School for 34 years and retiried in 2005. She was also the chair of the Democratic Party from 1987 to 1998. According to Ivins Web site, he’s sold computers and taught computer classes for the BOCES Adult Continuing Education Program for the last eight years. He has his own computer technician business, Ivins Consulting. The only current member of the five-person City Council that will remain the same is Commissioner of Accounts John Franck. The Incumbent Democrat is running unopposed. |
