Commissioner of the Public Works Department Thomas McTygue has served the city of Saratoga Springs for 32 years, but in two weeks, it will be his last time on the November ballot.
“My family has had enough of this,” McTygue said Monday from the Sky View Farm on County Road No. 68 in Saratoga that he co-owns with harness trainer John Stark. “My wife might pull the lever against me to get me out of office.” McTygue held a press conference regarding the alleged FBI probe into his department and refuted them having contact with him or his employees. “All the allegations made are false,” he said. “No agency has been in touch with us. “Making false allegations in itself is a crime,” he continued. McTygue expressed his displeasure with a headline that read, “FBI questions DPW workers” in the Sunday, Oct. 21 issue of The Saratogian. He said the headline did not go with the article at all, and neighbors and McTygue supporters were also upset. He questioned why people are making all these allegations two weeks before the general election. His answer is that simply some supporters of other politicians want him unseated and defeated. McTygue is running against Anthony “Skip” Scirocco as he tries to unseat the Democrat incumbent. “I feel very confident going into this election,” McTygue said. McTygue touched on other allegations that he used DPW employees on his horse farm. He said Stark bought some milling material – which is old asphalt – and used it to extend the driveway to a half-mile training track for the horses. Charles Kenny, a neighbor of McTygue since 1986, said he’s never seen a DPW employee work on the horse farm. “Tom is one of the most honest, reputable people I know,” Kenny said. “All the allegations are 100 percent false.” McTygue pointed towards the beginning of his driveway, where some supporters of Mayor Valerie Keehn (and opponents of McTygue) stood with a sign saying “FBI Probes McTygue.” Longtime McTygue opponent David Bronner was one of the men at the entrance of McTygue’s farm. “He stalks me,” McTygue said of Bronner. “It gets a little old after a while.” He said that headline hurts his good reputation as commissioner. |
