David Bryce and Laurie Goddard don’t work in the same medium, don’t have similar styles and don’t focus on related subjects.

What the artists from Western Massachusetts share is “Elemental,” a show introducing the pair’s work to Saratoga Springs.

Pieces by Bryce and Goddard will be exhibited now through Nov. 18 at Mimosa Gallery on Beekman Street in the Arts District. The opening reception for “Elemental” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 6 - 8 p.m.

Bryce has gained national notoriety as a sculptor, particularly for his Asian-inspired figures, which he characterizes as “three dimensional drawings constructed from ribbons of clay.”

Bryce’s work has also been influenced by his interest in costume, storytelling, and decorative arts, but above all drawing, which he cites as the “wellspring” of all his art.

Goddard creates abstract landscapes by combining water based paints and varnishes with oxidized semi-precious leaf and charcoal on hardboard panels and 300 pound paper. The painter refers to the result as “a cool amalgam of both a moment and a lifetime.”

In a statement on www.lauriegoddard.com, the artist said, “This process, the addition and subtraction of color and the manipulation of the leaf through patination, pushes the limits of water based mediums, and forces their compatibility with metals. Through this tension and transformation the work becomes a travelogue of modern and antique imagery.”

Japanese architecture and calligraphy, as well as time spent living in Milan and visiting Italy have influenced her work. In addition, the “ever changing beauty and urgency” of Goddard’s home state now also provides the artist with ample inspiration.
