For nearly 70 years, Hattie’s Restaurant has been famous for its Southern fried chicken.

Lesser-known but equally impressive was original owner Hattie Gray’s generosity and compassion.

According to www.hattiesrestaurant.com, Hattie donated to many local charities, employed young people when no one else would and possessed an inability to let anyone go hungry. She was also known to make everyone feel welcome, whether they were from royalty or poverty.

On Friday, Oct. 19, the restaurant located at 45 Phila Street will host an unusual event orchestrated by local musician Dylan Emelianoff. The evening’s entertainment begins at 10 p.m. and includes performances by three Saratoga Springs bands, stand-up comedy, circus tricks and some “ridiculous” surprises.

Emelianoff has a lot of respect for what Hattie did for others, and said the current owners hold true to the same principles. He said he’s honored to be playing at Hattie’s.

“I’m positive this is somethting Hattie would have liked,” he said. “She helped out a lot of musicians.”

Emelianoff’s band, Sai u drom, is headlining the event and will perform more than a dozen of their trademark “poetic pirate gypsy folkin rock” tunes. Sugar Eater and Skeletons in the Piano will also play a couple ditties each. For the last few songs of the night, members from all three of the groups will play together.

Set up like a campfire or a get-togther more than a show, Emelianoff said having lots of dancing and audience participation will be key. He added that he wouldn’t mind if the bands weren’t the focus, but rather just serve as a soundtrack for people’s conversations. As for attendance, he expects about 30 people, but said there could be 200.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a lot of people there, but I’m not banking on it,” he said.

Elizabeth Alexander, co-owner of Hattie’s, said Emelianoff is an employee of the eatery and they always support their staff’s endeavors.

“We’re looking forward to it. We’re very excited,” Alexander said. “And there’s no cover, so everybody can come out and enjoy a good time.”

By putting on the event, Emelianoff hopes to generate some interest from the community in some of the more unconventional acts the city has to offer. He believes Saratoga’s music scene has some unsung heros, like Nick Social, who deserve more exposure and recognition.

Social, guitarist/vocalist of Sugar Eater, has been instrumental in putting on a lot of local shows over the years. Emelianoff said Social has attracted many talented out-of-state artists and given tons of young bands their first gigs without ever looking for anything in return.

Social said the event sounded like a pretty cool idea. Even though the three bands perform together frequently, he admitted to being a bit intimidated by the prospect of playing an all acoustic show because it’s not something his band usually does.

“This will certainly be different,” Social said. “It never ceases to amaze me the odd places people decide to have punk shows.”
