Labor Day heralds the end of many things in our lovely Saratoga area. The track closes down for another season, vacation ends for our youngsters and area golfers will frequent the links less often.

However, this past weekend was a very active one at many of the area courses. They know that fall is on its way and they want to end the season in grand fashion.

The Ballston Spa Country Club has crowned two champions - the women’s and men’s medal play champions. Tony Merola, playing in the championship flight, is the overall champion with a total score of 149 on rounds of 74 and 75.

Other champions play in separate flights according to handicap are - A flight: Jim Breitinger, 159 (76-83); B flight: Paul Dunkelburger, 160 (80-80); C Flight: Ed Rufer, 174 (90-84); D Flight: Ed Schwanke, 176 (87-89).

In the women’s championship, the overall champion is Sue Delanoy, playing in the first flight. Delanoy defeated Sue Kahler on the 19th hole in their final match.

Other final results - 2nd flight: Roxanne Andrews defeated Sue Mansfield, 7-6; 3rd flight: Beth Bassett def. Pat Stack, 3-2; 4th flight: Barbara Ashbee def. Marylou Powell, 2-up; 5th flight: Lauren Petraske def. Amy Upjohn, 5-4; 6th flight: Rayette Johnson def. Sue Pollard, 5-3.

Congratulations to Will Sutton, a member of the Galway Central golf team, on winning the junior championship with a total score of 181 (90-91).

The match play championship was also contested at Eagle Crest. In the semifinals, it was Dan Seiter defeating Ron Cohen, 5-4, and Lee Reeves defeating Tim Biancha, 3-2. In the finals, it was Seiter over Reeves, 3-2.

Both McGregor Links and Eagle Crest should be commended for their participation in the nationwide Patriots Day Event. Funds were raised to support families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty.

The McGregor Links Country Club’s busy holiday schedule was highlighted by its annual Sadie Hawkins Day, where the ladies invite the men to play in a best ball event.

This is a great way to end your golf season. Former St. Peter’s and Spa Catholic students are urged to attend.

The tourney begins at 11 a.m. with lunch followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun scramble. A great buffet follows play. Cost is $150 per person (tax deductible).
