Since their formation two years ago, Happy Balky and the Good Livin’ have done everything in their power to raise the profile of the relatively unexplored genre of Mountain-Pop.

Happy Balky guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Zac Kissinger said the term best describes the band’s left of the dial approach to bluegrass music.

“Essentially, Mountain-Pop is high-energy folk music that’s been heavily influenced by bluegrass. But instead of playing lots of standards, we do almost all original material. The melodies are catchy, the lyrics are often comedic and our live show is very energetic,” he said.

To thank fans for listening, the Ballston Spa quartet will be giving away a free CD containing previously unreleased original material and cover songs. “Live at Bullfrog Pond,” a seven song EP, will only be available at their show on Friday, Aug. 31 at 8 p.m. at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs.

“Our first show was at Caffe Lena, and the place is very special to everyone in the band,” Kissinger said. “It’s a venue that is all about listening to the music.”

Exactly 85 copies of the album have been pressed because that’s the number of people it takes to fill the house at Caffe Lena. Attending the performance is the only way to acquire the EP; Kissinger said the CD won’t be available for purchase at any point in the future.

The limited edition EP is the group’s first release since dropping their five song self-titled EP more than a year ago. The band is currently working on two full-length albums, “Apple’s Decree” and “Odie’s Resolve,” which are scheduled to be released this winter and next spring.

Tickets for the show are $10, and can be reserved in advance over the phone or purchased at the door. Chris Ronk, who plays harmonica and mandolin in the band, said he’d definitely recommend making reservations since their last two shows at the venue have sold out.
