Brett Hearn of Sussex, N.J., won his fifth Albany Saratoga Modified Feature of the year last Friday night, and first since June, after chasing Ken Tremont for the past several weeks.
Hearn missed the race last week because of a scheduling conflict. Previous to that, Hearn had been trying to figure out how to beat Tremont, who has been just about unbeatable on the CVRA circuit. Don Ackner led the races first three laps before Jeff Trombley shot around him on Lap 4. A Lap 7 restart provided a great side-by-side battle for the lead between Trombley and Marc Johnson. However, the 13th-starting Hearn was already among the top five by then. As Trombley and Johnson raced for the lead on Lap 11, Trombley hit a hole on the racing surface in Turn 4 which was just what Hearn needed and he shot between the two cars and into the lead. Johnson, after starting in the 17th position, then took over second until Lap 25 when Tremont, looking for his fourth win in-a-row, moved into the runner-up spot. Second was as close as Tremont would get, as Hearn head built up a 3-second advantage. Hearn’s fifth win of the year was his 83rd at the speedway. Tremont closed the gap a little at the finish, but had to be content with second place over Marc Johnson, Trombley and track invader, Danny Johnson. Chris Busta won his fourth 25-Lap Sporstmen feature of the year in their main event. Andy Boniewski and Scott Duell started on the front row and contested the lead for some 19 laps while Busta made his way to the front without the aid of caution flags. On Lap 20, Busta used the outside line to motor into the lead. Just two laps later, last week’s winner, Rob Langevin, moved into second place and that is where he would finish as Busta pulled away to his sixth career win. Boniewski held on to third (a career best) over Duell and Chris Johnson. Alex Bell won his first ever Budget Sportsmen feature holing off Paul Dunham in the process. Bell used a Lap 7 restart to make it past Angela Hoard and then held off five-time winner Dunham for his first career victory. Hoard held on to third at the finish over Mike Visconti and John Russo who replaced Al Williams in the No. 301. In the most hotly contested race of the night, Jimmy Eaton won his first Pro-Street Stock feature of the year after a heated battle with Cale Kneer. Kneer took the lead on Lap 10 from Darryl Carl and Eaton took over second soon thereafter. A restart on Lap 19 bunched up the cars and Eaton and Kneer now raced side-by-side while making contact on more than one occasion. Under caution, speedway officials sent Kneer to the pits for the contact, but allowed him to resume second place after reviewing the video of the action. When racing was restarted, there was great side-by-side racing, right to the finish, when the top seven cars crossed the finish line less than three seconds apart. Eaton would take his third career win over Kneer, Lori Cary, Vinny Santoro and Kim Duell. DJ Brundige won his first 20-Lap Limited Division race in their feature. Brundige passed Brian Ashline late in the going, then held off Paul Mulrain at the finish. Ashline finished third ahead of Brandon Emigh and Dan Older. Phil DeFiglio won the combined 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder Mini-Stock Feature. Brett Osgood was the first 4-cylinder across the line. Friday, Aug. 17 is “Morris Auto Group Kids’ Night” featuring Kiddy Rides and the biggest Enduro ever at the Speedway. Radio Station Froggy Country 107.1 and Color Tyme Rent-To-Own are sponsoring a 100-Lap Enduro. All other divisions will also be competing. Race time is 6:45 p.m. |
