The Bright Light Motion Who’s who: Joe Mansman – guitar and vocals Alex Mansman - guitar
About the band: The Glens Falls duo only formed six months ago, but has been collaborating for almost two years. Joe, 22, is nineteen-year-old Alex’s uncle. Artists including The Goo Goo Dolls, Oasis, Jars of Clay, Dragonforce and Pearl Jam have influenced the band’s sound, which Joe described as “acoustic indie pop/emo.” However, he added that The Bright Light Motion’s in-your-face stage presence owes a debt to glam metal bands from the 1980s. In April, The Bright Light Motion released their first EP, “What's the worst that could happen?” The group is currently working on a follow-up EP. Instead of relying on typical chord progressions, The Bright Light Motion prefers to use different tunings such as Open D and Nashville. Alex noted it lends itself to greater originality and results in the instrument producing a different kind of ring. The band usually plays two shows a week. Their sets consist mainly of the dozen or so original tunes they’ve written, but also contain cover songs such as “Wonderwall” by Oasis, “It’s for the Best” by Straylight Run, and “Fly” by Jars of Clay. In the future, Joe and Alex hope to record a full-length album, add more band members, tour the country and quit their day jobs. The Bright Light Motion is playing a free, all ages show at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Jitters Cafe in Ballston Spa with Happy Balky and the Good Livin’. Every Thursday folks can catch them performing at the Circus Café’s open mic. To check out the band, visit www.myspace.com/thebrightlightmotion. Quotable Quotes: “Our music tends to be more toned-down and mellow, but at heart we’re metal,” Alex said. “I love the atmosphere at shows, the electricity in the air,” Joe said. |
