The Saratoga Springs Board of Education held its annual organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the school district’s administration building.
Approximately halfway through the regular board meeting which followed, the power went out like it did for thousands of others in Saratoga County. Despite the darkness, the meeting continued on. Superintendent Janice White reported on the status of the school district’s 2006-07 goals and objectives initially with a PowerPoint presentation. Once the power quit, she finished by reading the points to the assembled crowd. The district’s five goals for the past school year included: Supporting students to achieve academic standards at federal and state established proficiency levels Providing a learning environment that motivates academic, social and emotional development and inspires personal initiative Ensuring the district maintains a high quality staff committed to educational excellence Endorsing the continued community involvement in the implementation of the district’s mission Managing the district’s financial resources efficiently and in the best interests of students and the community White’s presentation contained a thorough breakdown of each goal’s objectives and a snapshot of the progress. Out of 28 objectives, 17 have been successfully completed and 10 are currently in progress. Only one objective, investigating the needs for property acquisition in anticipation of enrollment growth in projected areas of the district, had no progress made to date. In addition, White outlined what has to be done for 2007-08. A needs assessment, which is completed by the divisions and departments, was due on July 2. The report will be out Aug. 23 and followed the next day by a board/administrative session. The upcoming school year’s goals and objectives should be developed by Sept. 7. During Tuesday’s organizational meeting, the president and vice president of the school board were elected. Francis Palumbo was named president and Will Martin was chosen as vice president. Various other district officers were appointed as well. The board’s next meeting is at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the administration building. |
