The Saratoga Springs City School District Board of Education unanimously reelected Frank Palumbo and Will Martin as president and vice president for the 2008-09 school year during their organization meeting Tuesday evening.

Also addressed at the meeting were the goals and objectives of the 2007-08 school year. There were five main goals that the district worked to achieve this past year, including:

• empower students to achieve local, national and global academic standards at essential proficiency levels

• nurture a safe learning environment that is responsive to and stimulates academic, social and emotional development while inspiring personal initiatives within the students

• ensure that the Saratoga Springs City School District recruits, hires, develops and retains a high quality staff committed to educational excellence in an ever-changing global society

• engage the community in partnerships that actively support Saratoga Springs City School District initiatives

• oversee the district’s resources in a proactive, responsible and efficient manner in the best interest of the students, staff and community.

In order to meet national standards for the No Child Left Behind Act, the district had made steady improvements in their mathematics and English language arts in all grade levels, specifically seventh grade ELA and grade six math scores. The district has also put an emphasis on literacy instruction and 21st century learning skills into all content areas to prepare students for life in a technologically-advanced world. A Technology Team was created, consisting of administrators and teachers and has met several times throughout the school year to complete a draft copy of district-wide technology standards. The draft was approved by an administrative council, and the team is updating and evaluating the draft in order to implant it throughout the district in the future.

An ongoing project for the district is to pilot and assess alternative fuel sources for busses. The district applied to the New York State Association for Pupil Transportation to be selected to pilot hybrid busses however they were rejected for the 2007-08 school year. They have reapplied for the 2008-09 school year.

Safety of the students is a priority in any school district, and Saratoga Springs is constantly making changes to ensure the safety of their students and staff. Security measures were added, such as cameras in the high school cafeteria, exterior cameras at Maple Avenue Middle School, distribution of radios and lock down and evacuation drills in case of an emergency.

Most of the goals of the district are complete and work is ongoing for those which were not completed by the end of the school year.
