Sports - Fresh from Wimbledon, Serena puts on show at Armory PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eric DeGrechie

It’s been a tradition of mine for at least the last 20 years to wake up early each summer and watch the finals of Wimbledon.

Except when rain throws the schedule off, the women’s final is played on Saturday and the men’s final is on Sunday. The action starts around 9 a.m. NBC touts its coverage as “Breakfast at Wimbledon” though it’s actually the afternoon in England.

People will be talking about this year’s men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal forever as it may have been the most exciting tennis match I’ve ever seen period. But before the men went at it, sisters Venus and Serena Williams were at Centre Court battling it out in the latest chapter of their rivalry.

This time around, Venus got the best of her younger sister. The two teamed up to win their third Wimbledon doubles title.

The entire Wimbledon experience is especially grueling, but that didn’t stop Serena from making her scheduled appearance in Albany on Wednesday night. Touring with the Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis, Williams played doubles and singles against the New York Buzz.

The match was held at the Washington Avenue Armory, which is the brand new home of the Buzz. In front of a capacity crowd, Williams put on a show.

Williams got right to business in her doubles match as she served three aces on first serve. The Buzz players are no slouches as this is a professional tennis league, but watching the speed and power of Serena’s serve was eye-opening.

The decision to move the Buzz inside to the Armory has been met with some opposition as fans have enjoyed watching them outside at Schenectady’s Central Park since 1995. The problem with playing outside of course is the potential for bad weather and canceling a match when a marquee player like Serena comes to town would be disastrous for the financial state of the team. From that standpoint, the Armory was the right call, but it was so hot in the building that at times it was a bit uncomfortable. It’s something the officials are working on.

Though Serena didn’t play her best tennis, she was still more than good enough to win her two matches and her all-white Washington uniform made you feel like you were at Wimbledon just a little bit. Having stars like her come to the area is very important to the economy and the local fans definitely came out in droves.
