William P. Morrow

 

Westampton, NJ – William P. Morrow passed away in the afternoon of June 6, 2008 at a Saratoga Springs, NY hospital following an acute case of pneumonia. He was 91.

 

Bill was born on March 14, 1917 in Elmira, NY to James E. Morrow and Vera A. Criddle.  He lived the majority of his life in New York and New Jersey, including most of the last 30 years in Westampton, New Jersey. An Army-Air Force WWII veteran, he attended New York University acquiring an Engineering Degree in 1953. He also earned his Real Estate License and worked as a tax advisor during the latter part of his career.

 

Bill served in WWII in the US Signal Corp and US Air Force from 1941 to 1945, reaching the rank of Staff-Sergeant where he was responsible for the training and maintenance of the then secret advanced warning radar stations.  He participated in the Pacific Arena for over three years spending much of his time stationed in Panama flying B29 Pacific rim radar calibration runs assigned to the 410th Air Force. Just before the end of WWII, he was transferred to Imperial Valley, CA where he met his wife-to-be Adeline K. Belda. “Addie” and Bill were married in San Diego, CA on Oct 11, 1945. After discharge from the service, he and his new wife moved to Park Ridge, NJ where he began a long and exciting career with the Radio Marine Corporation, later to become RCA. He worked primarily on the installation and calibration of commercial and military radar systems. His position at RCA included travel to remote Arctic locations and the Marshall Islands. While at RCA he had numerous position transfers until his retirement in 1979 at the age of 62. He lived with his family in Waldwick, NJ until 1958, Framingham, MA until 1960, Willingboro, NJ until 1972, Westampton, NJ until 2007 and Saratoga Springs, NY where he lived for the last seven months of his life. He had an aptitude and love for engineering that came from his grandfather Alexander P. Morrow, the original inventor and patent holder of the

 

Morrow Coaster Brake and President of the Willys-Morrow Company located in Elmira, NY.

 

His electrical engineering interests also spilled over to Amateur Radio, where he held the call letters N2ADX for over 30 years. 

 

He had an active career as a community volunteer. He held a number of positions, including Scout Master, for Troop 85 out of Willingboro, NJ while his sons participated in the program.

 

He was both manager and umpire in the Willingboro Little League. He held positions as Assistant State Director, District Director, President, Vice-president and Treasurer for the AARP Chapter 1545 of Mount Holly during an 18 year period. He also held numerous positions on the Board of Education for the Westampton School Board, including President and Treasurer. His favorite volunteer work was for the Burlington County Amateur Emergency Group, where he used his Amateur Radio experience at safety and medical checkpoints during local sports and community events. He also enjoyed his volunteer work as an AARP-sponsored IRS tax aid for the elderly.

 

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Adeline in 2004, his father, James E. Morrow in 1948, his mother, Vera Criddle Morrow in 1968, his sister, Vera Morrow Feuersten Morrow in 2004, and his brothers James E. Jr. in 1975, Arthur in 1981, and John who died young from the influenza virus outbreak in 1917.

 

His is survived by his children, William P. Morrow Jr. and wife Diane of Worcester, Massachusetts, Dorothy Pawlowski and her husband Joseph of Mt. Holly, New Jersey, and Richard Morrow and his wife Therese of Wilton, New York. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jonathan E. Pawlowski of Arlington, Virginia, Ryan J. Pawlowski of Dublin, Ohio, and twins Alexander and Olivia Morrow of Wilton, New York, as well as a niece, Barbara Grace that he was especially fond of and her husband Bill of Utica, New York.

 

Relatives and friends gathered for a memorial service on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 149 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, New York. According to his wishes, his remains are to be cremated and then interred with his wife in his family gravesite at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY, where a private family only military honors ceremony will be conducted at a later date.
