Two people were killed after a car accident that occurred just before 10 p.m. Wednesday in the Town of Greenfield.

State police are investigating the two-car crash that killed Michael Arpey, 44, of Porter Corners and Saratoga Springs High School Junior Edward Loomis, 17, of Saratoga Springs.

The accident occurred on State Route 9N, and an investigation revealed that Arpey was traveling northbound in a pickup truck when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane, striking the car driving by Loomis. Both drivers were ejected from their cars, and Loomis was pronounced dead on the scene by Saratoga Springs Coroner John DiMartino. Arpey was transported to Saratoga Hospital where he later died of injuries he sustained in the crash. There were no passengers in either vehicle and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

According to Saratoga Springs High School Principal Frank Crowley, Loomis was a member of the class of 2009 and moved to Saratoga Springs from Spokane, WA in September 2006. He was a member of the varsity football team and was admired by his teammates for his commitment to the sport and to his team.

“It’s always sad when you lose a young life so early. It’s difficult to accept and cope with for all of us. He was a good student and a conscientious worker at the Saratoga Diner. He had a great work ethic,” Crowley said.

Crowley added that the mood at the high school is usually a very exciting time of year was very somber today. A crisis response team announced the news to students Thursday morning and had counseling support services available for students who needed someone to talk to and a place to grieve.
