Fists will be flying this Saturday at the Maple Avenue Fire Department.
Several local fighters will be making their way to the ring at the boxing card that includes Empire State Games qualifier bouts. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. Among the local contingent will be Josh Dulmer of Greenwich, Alex Design of Saratoga Springs and Will Madera. Promoter Dave Wojcicki, who’s putting on the card with Bob Miller of Uncle Sam’s in Troy, is expecting between 10-12 fights. Miller is the father of popular local heavyweight Shannon Miller. Around 4-5 will be tourney bouts for the Games, with the others promising more experience for the young fighters. Dulmer, Design and Madera all won New York State Golden Gloves titles in April. They are trained by Jerrick Jones of the Albany Boxing Club, located on Quail Street in Albany. “There should be some really good fights,” Wojcicki said. “There are fighters going from novice to open.” Those who qualify for the Empire States will head to Binghamton at the end of July. The fights at the fire department will be held under a tent. The organizers are expecting hot temperatures, so the firefighters are providing a large fan to cool down the fighters and fans. The firefighters will also be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. The cost per ticket is $10 in advance and $15 at the show. A portion of the proceeds will be going to the fire station, Saratoga Youth Boxing and Uncle Sam’s. |
