Brett Hearn cruised to his second win in a row last Friday night at Albany Saratoga and now sits just 4 wins away from tying Jack Johnson for the all-time winningest driver at the speedway.

Don Mattison and John Proctor started on the front row and battled side by side for the lead for the first 8 laps with Mattison pulling ahead on Lap 9. When Jeff Trombey’s car broke on Lap 15, it brought out the first caution. Mattison and Proctor still occupied the first two spots while Kenny Tremont and Brett Hearn had just broken into the Top 10 from their deep starting spots.

The great race continued up front with Mattison and Proctor exchanging the lead several times before the second caution of the race on Lap 22. On that restart, Hearn was sitting fourth but quickly picked off one car a lap as he took the lead on Lap 25. Two laps later, Tremont passed Mattison for second, but by then Hearn was on cruise-control as he easily captured his 86th career Malta win. Following Hearn and Tremont at the line was Dave Camara, his best finish of the year, with Mike Perrotte and Mike Ronca completing the Top 5.

Mike Ketchum of Mayfield dominated the Sportsman main event piloting the John Kollar #10.

For the second week in a row, the Sportsman winner started on the outside pole and led every lap. Ketchum was never challenged while out front, however the race for second was fantastic as Mark Kislowski, Chris Busta and Mike Tholin all battled for the spot with Tholin finally getting the position. Busta hung on for third ahead of Joe Santoro and Kislowski. Ketchum had nearly a 4-second lead at the finish as he won his fourth career Albany Saratoga feature.

Ricky Quick made an impressive drive to win the 50-Lap Budget Sportsman race. Quick should have started in the Top 10 but, because of an error in handicapping, started last. Luckily for Quick, the race was 50 laps. Scott Duell started on the front row and was fending off all challenges in a race that saw very few cautions. Quick pulled into second position on Lap 32, caught Duell by lap 35 and, after some good side-by-side racing, took the lead on Lap 39. The win for Quick was his first at the track. Frank Hoard, III came in second followed by Cullen Howe, Frank Corradi and Duell.  At post-race weigh-ins, Corradi’s car was found to be light resulting in his disqualification.

Lori Langevin, in her pink #96, scored her second win in a row in the Pro-Stock class. The race ran Green to Checkers without a Caution flag. Greg McGill led the first 3 laps with Bernie Companion taking over on Lap 4. One lap later, Langevin moved into second place and challenged Companion. The two battled door-to-door for five laps before Langevin pulled away to record victory #14 at the track.  She was followed across the line by Ed Thompson, Companion, Kim Duell and McGill.

Ballston Spa’s Mike Ostrander won his first Limited feature of the year in their 20-Lap race. Ostrander started on the pole and led nearly every lap except for a couple laps when Ken Conroy stuck his front bumper out in front. Conroy led as they got the White Flag but slipped off the backstretch on the last lap allowing Ostrander to pick off the win. Conroy held on to second followed by Dave Billings, Mark Lester and Dan Petronis.

In the Mini-Stock race leader Elmer Montville broke in the fourth turn of the last lap allowing Travis Tromans to slip past for his first win of the year.

Racing continues this Friday, June 6, with Spring Championship Night. There will be double points awarded in all divisions as well as the first of two scheduled appearances by the Central New York Mini Sprints. Race time is 6:45 p.m.

Notes:  It has recently been learned that the Budget Sportsman winner of two weeks ago (May 23, 2008) Frank Hoard, III, came up light at that night’s post-race weigh-in.  As a result, second place finisher Scott Duell was awarded the win.
